It’s been 6 months since I posted here about my chronic bloating condition (click to read) and 1 year since I’ve completely cut gluten and lactose out of my diet (plus many other trigger foods like onions, garlic, carbonated drinks, chewing gum… the list goes on).

Unfortunately, despite a year of highs and lows, I am still battling with this condition and haven’t received a diagnosis.

I’ve been through the Low Fodmap diet, tested for celiac, gluten allergy, lactose intolerance, thyroid malfunction and the latest one, SIBO. All of my tests come back with negatives, but my symptoms keep coming.

Today, I wanted to show you what a SIBO test is for those that have tried it all but SIBO is yet to be tested. I recorded the process hoping it helps any of you going through the same because I know how hopeless it can be not to know what’s causing problems in your body. Take a look below:

I must say that I was very disappointed. After reading so much about SIBO I was sure that this was the one. Now, please note that there are also false negatives for this test, it is not very accurate but apparently is the only way to test for SIBO.

Because I’ve been trying to find ways to ease my symptoms in this process, while I get my diagnosis, I’ve learned a few things that has helped me get less bloated and that have reduced the frequency and duration of it.

– Cutting carbs. I can’t remember if it was a blog, an article a book. No idea. I read somewhere that if despite cutting gluten and lactose your symptoms didn’t ease, that cutting carbs have shown results for many. It worked me! Now, it’s very difficult because I have to restrict my diet even more but worth it if you are desperate for the bloating to go away.

– Oregano Oil and Apple Cider Vinegar capsules: I read about herbal treatments for SIBO and couldn’t find side effects so I jumped in the wagon (I am kind if desperate). It’s not the cheapest alternative and I am not completely sure it’s working by itself but I’ve been better and I’ve been taking an oregano oil capsule a day after meals.

– A lot of cardio and hydration: specially when I am feeling bloated. It’s a no brainer but it’s very difficult to motivate yourself when you are feeling like a balloon. Just do it, I promise once you start moving you’ll feel better.

It’s been a long journey and I still don’t see the light at the end of the tunnel but it comforts me to know that every new lab test is a step closer. I’ll keep you posted my friends.
